Facebook Messenger gains encrypted calls
In its latest update, Facebook Messenger gets end-to-end encrypted voice and video calls. The app already gave users an option to secure their one-on-one text chats with end-to-end encryption
As per the company, this new step has been taken because of the rapid surge in calling in the last year due to the pandemic. Over 150 million video calls are made per day on Messenger as per Facebook. So, end-to-end encryption is now introduced to calls as well.
The company, notorious for its invasive tracking, claims that your content in an end-to-end encrypted conversation is protected from the moment it leaves your device to the moment it reaches the receiver’s device. So, technically, no one, including Facebook, can see/listen to it.
Facebook will also begin testing end-to-end encryption for group chats, including voice and video calls. Then, the company will also soon begin rolling out these features to conversations on its sister app Instagram
Also, for disappearing messages, users can now choose the amount of time before messages disappear. This ranges from as few as 5 seconds to as long as 24 hours.
