How to back up iPhone without iCloud
The simplest option is to use iCloud to back up your data, which is not only quick to set up but also facilitates setting up a new phone if your old one is sold or broken. Other services, such as Google Drive, are also available for backup, but they aren’t as handy.
However, you may also back up your iPhone to your Mac or Windows PC and keep complete control over your data backups if you’re the user who is adamant about maintaining your privacy.
How to back up iPhone without iCloud
- Use the charging cable that came with your phone to connect it to your computer.
- If you’re using Windows or a Mac with macOS 10.14 or older, use iTunes; if you’re using macOS 10.15 Catalina or later, use Finder.
- If you’re using Finder, go to the left-hand menu under “Locations” and look for your iPhone. Or, just select “File” > “New Finder Window” in the top Finder menu bar.
- You should notice a little iPhone symbol in the upper left corner of iTunes; click it. If you don’t see it, your system may need to be authorised. Select “Account” > “Authorizations” > “Authorize This Computer” from the top iTunes menu.
- After that, the process is nearly the same for either iTunes or Finder, albeit the look of the pages and the wording will alter significantly.
- If this is the first time you’ve done this, you may be asked if you trust the phone, first on the computer, and then on the phone itself, when you click on the phone icon.
- You may also be asked if you want to set up your phone as a new device or restore it from a previous backup if you’re a first-time user. Choose the first option in this scenario.
- Look for the category called “Backups” under the “General” tab at the top. In iTunes, choose “This computer” or “Back up all of the data on your iPhone to your Mac” in Finder.
- You’ll want to encrypt your backup to make it more secure. Enter a password and check “Encrypt iPhone backup” in iTunes or “Encrypt local backup” in Finder. Don’t forget your password; else, you’ll lose access to your files.
- It’s likely that the backup will begin automatically once you’ve established the encryption. Otherwise, select “Back Up Now” from the drop-down menu.
Simply go to the same page and select “Restore Backup” if you need to restore your backup.
You have the option of backing up your iPhone manually or having it back up automatically each time you connect it to your computer. Select “Automatically sync when this iPhone is connected” from the “Options” section directly below the “Backups” section.
