Hyundai Venue gets iMT clutchless manual gearbox
- Hyundai has debuted a unique new technology called iMT (Intelligent Manual Transmission) on the turbo petrol variant of the Venue compact SUV.
- This industry-first gearbox technology claims to combine the strengths of manual and automatic transmissions since it is a manual transmission with two pedals, so no clutch!. Therefore, it has only two pedals in its footwell – much like an auto gearbox.
- The driver shifts the gears as they would in a manual gearbox, but the clutch pedal is now automated. It uses an ‘intention sensor’ with the gear lever that informs the transmission control unit (TCU) when the driver is about to change gears. The TCU then signals a hydraulic actuator to engage and disengage the clutch plate while the driver shifts gears.
- This iMT gearbox is a 6-speed unit, and the Hyundai Venue 1.0 turbo petrol equipped with this unit is confirmed to launch in India later this month.
