Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3, Galaxy Z Fold 3 launched: Price, specifications and more
Galaxy Z Flip 3
The new Samsung Z Flip 3 brings a completely revised design with an old Google Pixel-like glass window housing its camera modules and a new, larger 1.9-inch AMOLED cover display.
What’s new on the Z Flip 3 is Corning Gorilla Glass Victus protection on its exterior, and a much-improved ‘Armor Aluminum frame’ for superior durability as well as IPX8 rating, a first for foldables.
The improved inner foldable Dynamic AMOLED display is 6.7-inches in size with FHD+ resolution and a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate.
What’s not new on the Galaxy Z Flip 3 is its camera system. On the outside, you get a 12MP f/1.8 main camera with 1.4µm pixel size and OIS that’s accompanied by a 12MP f/2.2 ultra-wide-angle unit. The hole punch camera on the inside also retains its 10MP resolution.
The battery on this device is pretty small at just 3,300mAh with support for 15W charging. With a high refresh rate display, a 3,300mAh cell would surely struggle to get through the day.
Powering this folding smartphone is the 5G-enabled Snapdragon 888 SoC with 8GB of RAM and 128GB/256GB of fast UFS 3.1 storage.
Also launched alongside this phone are funky official cases and the Thom Brown special edition of it with bespoke design elements.
The Galaxy Z Flip 3 price starts at USD 999 globally.
Galaxy Z Fold 3
The headline feature of the Samsung Z Fold 3 is its (almost) invisible 4MP under-display camera with a large 2.0µm pixel size. You also get a secondary 10MP selfie shooter on the external cover display, but this one is in a hole punch.
The internal display is the same 7.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED panel with adaptive 120Hz refresh rate from its predecessor. The 6.2-inch cover display now gets a 120Hz refresh rate as well.
You also get a tougher Armor Aluminum frame which is claimed to be more durable than the frames on previous Samsung foldables. The much-required IPX8 water resistance is finally also standard.
Galaxy Note fans would be happy to know that the Z Fold 3 now supports S Pen, but the implementation is a bit weird here. You get two versions – S Pen Pro and the new S Pen Fold Edition. Both are sold separately as accessories, both have to be carried separately since there’s no dedicated stylus slot on this phone, and only the S Pen Pro has Bluetooth connectivity.
The main camera setup on the Galaxy Z Fold 3 gets no update. You get a trio of 12MP sensors – main, ultra-wide, and 2x telephoto – from the Z Fold 2.
Also strange is that the battery capacity, at 4,400mAh, has been reduced by 100mAh here. You still get 25W wired charging and 11W wireless charging, but that battery number is quite small for a phone with two large displays!
Of course, you get a Snapdragon 888 chip here with 12GB of RAM as standard and 256GB/512GB of internal storage.
The Galaxy Z Fold 3 price starts at USD 1,799 globally.
