Toyota confirms affordable electric car for India
- Toyota has confirmed that it will introduce a mass-market electric vehicle (EV) in India. This car will be developed with Maruti Suzuki, the company’s alliance partner.
- Reports suggest that the upcoming Toyota EV will be based on Maruti’s WagonR-based EV. The latter will launch in India next year.
- Toyota will showcase an ultra-compact EV at the upcoming 2019 Tokyo Motor Show (see feature image). However, it will be a 2-seater car specifically made for Japan. But we may see some powertrain technology from this car to be adapted on to the India-spec model.
- While Toyota EV’s India launch is still a bit far away, Maruti’s version will likely give 130 km of range on a single charge. It is also expected to have support for DC fast charging.
