Mahindra, Ford to jointly develop a mid-size SUV
- Mahindra and Ford have strengthened their alliance by announcing the co-development of a midsize C-segment SUV which will be sold in India as well as in other emerging markets.
- The new SUV will get its underpinnings and powertrains form Mahindra. It will reportedly use the next-gen XUV500’s platform and a BSVI-compliant 2.0-litre diesel engine which will generate somewhere in the vicinity of 185 horsepower.
- While both SUVs will be manufactured together, they won’t be just badge-engineered versions of each other. Ford is said to properly differentiate its model from Mahindra’s in terms of design, equipment and even suspension.
- Recently, Mahindra also agreed to develop a low-displacement petrol engine for Ford’s present and upcoming vehicles from 2020. The two companies are also jointly developing a telematics control unit.
- Rumours of Ford India ending its independent operations in favour of a new joint venture with Mahindra were floating across the internet very recently. However, nothing official has been said on the American company’s behalf as yet.
